Avenged Sevenfold - Self Titled

Post by Chris » 01 Jun 2008, 11:36

It could very well be one of the best albums released last year.

i just think they're really rubbish. the band are quite talented, but that guy is one of the worst singers in rock (i know i know, he damaged his vocal chords or something). i hate their stupid names, and their 'we're so hard' image. just....... guff.

Waking The Fallen was awesome. Haven't heard much of their new stuff, but I remember listening to Seize The Day and thinking.. "CRINGE."

I haven't really listened to their other albums. I've heard songs here and there, and was never a fan.

Everyone, just give this one a listen. It is so fucking ridiculously awesome it's not even funny.

Well ok. I tried to share, but I suppose the dreaded combination of heavy riffs AND at least half decent studio production isn't for everyone.

I have actually.... and ironically enough, Last.fm reccommended it to me based on my listening taste the other day!

That last post was just my little vindictive stab at everyone who doesn't like the same music as me.

This album (apart from 'A Little Piece of Heaven') is incredible. Scream is wicked, Afterlife is amazing. and M. Shadows has worked on his voice, used to be shite live, but when i saw them he was really quality. and Synyster Gates has a ridiculously smug look on his face when hes doing his stupid good solos. he's ever so talented. so yeh.

Is that actually them? I've seen them a few times before and they've always been good live. I used to love them but my interest cooled. I haven't heard them in fucking ages, so I'm sure if someone shoved Waking The Fallen or City Of Evil on I wouldn't turn it off, I just don't really listen to metal at all nowadays.

Hahahaha that video is amazing.

Seriously though guys, the proof is in the eating:

They really are (to my mind) one of the most talented metal bands out there today.

Yes. See, I'm not letting the fact that they're popular cloud my judgement.

I can't really come back to that, because you described Queen as overrated and shit, and after that I can't think on what basis of reality I could possibly communicate anything to you.

Ps. this thread wasn't me trying to convince anyone that A7X are good... we all like and dislike music based on our own influences, and for whatever reason I just happen to like their latest record. It was more because I expected there would be other people on here who have enjoyed it that might want to contribute, but surprisingly... not.

When it comes to music I have always worked on the basis that there are bands you like, and bands you don't get. I like Miocene but I don't get Cannibal Corpse. I like Cire but I don't get Fear Factory. The reason for this is that as long as a) a band are making music they want to make, and b) there ARE people out there enjoying it, it definitely cannot be shit. This being said, I personally want to like as much music as possible, rather than have any specific taste. To this end I constantly try my best to listen to not only things I am instantly drawn to, but also things that push my boundaries and challenge my understanding of what music can be. What would be perfect for me would be if I could enjoy every single type of music. I know this isn't something everyone wants... there are a lot of people who pride themselves on their ability to like some bands and hate others, believing it to be a mark of superior aesthetic distinction. But like I was getting at, there surely can't be better or worse tastes in music. There's just music you like, and music you don't get.

Take Tom's band Malefice... they kindof stand on the edges of my musical taste, in the sense that I really enjoy certain aspects of their music, but don't get others. I don't see the aspects I don't get as 'bad'... I just acknowledge my own lack of appreciation for those particular traits. I'm not so arrogant as to think that this approach to music makes me better than other people, but I do certainly think there are too many people who let perspective stand in the way of their enjoyment of music. It's like people who love Tool's Undertow album, but will spit venom at Nickelback. One has perceived artistic integrity and one doesn't, but the music itself at times runs along a similar path. If that statement doesn't sit well with you, then actually take the time to analyse the two bands side by side (early Tool, not Aenima and after)... there might be differences that lead you to prefer one over the other... but there are undoubtedly similarities too. I find it alot easier to satisfy myself musically by looking for the aspects I like in this way, rather than dwelling on the ones I don't.

Wow, I just ejaculated all over this thread.

But Avenged Sevenfold definitely do not "Push..boundaries and challenge my understanding of what music can be."

In any way.

Just a thought.
